ABSTRACT

This study examined the effects of a literature project class, delivered collaboratively by a teacher librarian and a Korean language teacher, on the reading attitudes of science-gifted high school students. First-year students at a science-gifted high school participated in a 12-session program consisting of theme book selection, reading discussions, and book review writing, and changes in the cognitive, affective, and behavioral intention domains of reading attitude were assessed with pre- and post-tests. The book reviews written during the program were also analyzed using topic modeling to explore students’ responses. The results showed statistically significant improvements in all sub-factors of reading attitude, with the largest effect size in the behavioral intention domain. Nine topics emerged from the book reviews, indicating that students related the characters and social issues in the novels to their own lives and responded to them both cognitively and affectively. This study is meaningful in that it confirmed changes in reading attitude through a practical case of school library-based collaborative instruction.
