ABSTRACT

This study aimed to reclassify reading motivation types by reflecting reading experiences across different stages of life, recognizing that previous studies on reading motivation have primarily focused on specific theoretical perspectives and age groups. To achieve this purpose, previous domestic and international studies on reading motivation were analyzed, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 90 participants, including students, adults, and older adults, to explore motivational factors underlying their reading experiences. The interview data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis, and the findings from the literature review and interview analysis were integrated to identify the components of reading motivation and reclassify its types. The results revealed four common dimensions of reading motivation across different stages of life: knowledge and growth, interest and emotional satisfaction, purpose and problem solving, and relationships and social participation. Based on these findings, reading motivation was reclassified into four types: knowledge and growth-oriented, interest and emotional satisfaction-oriented, purpose and problem-solving-oriented, and relationship and social participation-oriented. This study is significant in that it integrates reading experiences across different stages of life and proposes a typological framework for understanding reading motivation in terms of personal growth, life needs, emotional experiences, and social relationships.
