ABSTRACT

This article studies the local training centres of ‘Kaitaku Onnazhuku’ for Migrant Brides in Manchukuo. Manshū Kaitaku Onnazhuku was a dormitory-type training centre designed by the Kwantung Army to nurture and procure spouses for Japanese male settlers who moved to Manchuria. Private partners established and operated the Kaitaku Onnazhuku, while the Japanese and Manchukuo governments financially supported the recruitment and emigration of women from the devastated rural regions to Manchuria and oversaw the operation of the centre. Founded in 1940, it served as the supplier of female spouses to Japanese male pioneers until 1943. As the male emigrants mobilized for the Pacific war in 1944, the women in the Kaitaku Onnazhuku served as labour force reserves in Manchuria. The establishment, development and changes in Kaitaku Onnazhuku’s character, goals and roles illustrate how the Japanese imperialism exploited the willingness of Japanese women from poor rural backgrounds to emigrate as reproductive capacity of women in Manchuria. The training centre was established and operated by private partners who were the leaders of the pioneer groups and leaders of the female colonial enterprise. Therefore, there are some differences between the training centres in terms of methods used to achieve key policy objectives and techniques used to train women. These differences cannot be identified by policy alone. Therefore, this study utilized major policies and testimonies from the women who were trained in Manshū Kaitaku Onnazhuku to analyze the process of establishment and change of Kaitaku Onnazhuku. As such, the preceding study on “Migrant Brides” is insufficient to grasp the overall institutional changes of the Kaitaku Onnazhuku. For examining the Japanese empire’s methods and characteristics of female mobilization, the article focused on the substance of the Kaitaku Onnazhuku.
