ABSTRACT

In recent years, there has been a surge in research on Koreans immigrating into Manchukuo. This article explores the phenomenon and investigates the current state and limitations of research on Koreans immigrating into Manchuria. It finds that the Korean government’s research support system contributes to the sudden rise in interest. Another is the growing impact of Korean immigrant literature in Manchuria and its growing interest among Korean literary circles within Korea. Currently, Korean young literature scholars play leading roles in this research. Such research has led to a treasure trove of discovery, providing new insight and understanding of colonial history and creating a new chapter for "last-minute" literature on the colonial period. This article takes the imbalance of literary study of “representation” as opposed to an engaged inquiry in the history of actuality. It explores the potential points of conflict and the problems that this dichotomy’s imbalance could cause. Lastly, this article examines the risks associated with the government support system for research on Korean immigration into Manchuria as a possible form of “methodological nationalism” that should be replaced with the “methodological regionalism” that the Manchurian Studies Association has explored.
