ABSTRACT

The Manchuria’s multifaceted perceptions link to probes into the how and why of the country. At times, this invariably tags the country to Chinese history at times, to its role within broader East Asian historical contexts at others, and to efforts to isolate and unearth Manchuria to a discernible history from within the country itself. Without question, Manchuria’s imagined forms are wide-ranging and distinctly varied from traditional age to the present. However, even within its varied pasts, patterns of interpretation create a general design outlined in characteristic periods throughout Manchuria history. This paper analyzes interpretations of Manchuria as presented in the discourse on new Qing history. It examines interpretations of Manchuria not only in terms of its significance as a nation and a national space, or as the hub of influence under the East Asian umbrella—where nations disperse and integrate their own histories and where Manchuria merely serves a nexus of East Asian change—but also as a “customary ” of Manchuria.
