ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to analyze how regionality (or regional identity) of Northeast China is defined. The research focuses on the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture and China and International Organization-sponsored local development projects. The findings exposed that China’s post-socialist and East Asia’s post-Cold War ideologies simultaneously influenced Yanbian’s development project. Economic liberalism and political authoritarianism also played roles in altering how Yanbian’s development projects took place. Under these influences, Yanbian developed into the forefront of socioeconomic opening and served as an international market border, an economic-administrative local authority, an essential geopolitical borderland in the country. Yanbian’s development produced contradictory and complementary dynamics in these different roles; however, these roles constitute Yanbian’s regional significance and make the region a characteristically unique area in Northeast China during the country’s transformation.
