ABSTRACT

Although research on Manchurian literature has been actively carried out in China recently, under political influence since the 1980’s it has generally done conducted from the polarised anti-Japanese or pro-Japanese perspective, without detailed analysis of the text in local context. With this situation, this study aims to explains the process and characteristics of the formation of Manchurian local literature, and based on this, attempts to reinterpret Liang Shanding’s novel The Valley of Green, setting emphasis on how author reproduces Manchurian local colours, a consideration of people and reflections of contemporary Manchurian society. For this, it firstly looks back on the process of the formation of Chinese local literature, analyses what connection this forms with contemporary literature in Russia and Japan, then discovering unique characteristics of narrative of Manchurian local literature. Finally, it suggests the possibility of applying various research methods to the study of literature in Manchukuo, which could lead to the discovery of new dimensions of the Manchurian local literature.
