ABSTRACT

In the 20th century, humankind attempted massive annihilations of particular groups of people during wars. The scale and the intensity of these annihilations increased as countries and scientists developed weapons explicitly created for mass murder. Genocide of this nature remains a present and historical problem that challenges humanity. This article explores the phenomenon by investigating its expressed practice and Imperial Japanese soldiers’ attempts to massacre Koreans in the Kando region throughout October 1920. The research exposes a need to evaluate the brutal history of Japanese troops dispatched to Kando under the guise of protecting Japanese citizens but embarking instead on a collective effort to massacre migrant Koreans living in the area. This research presents verifiable evidence that Imperial Japan partook in Koreans’ physical and mental persecution in the region before eventually killing them. It calls on the international community to re-evaluate the ‘Kando Genocide’ as a historical massacre that broke legally binding international agreements and regulatory standards, and an incident that has long gone un-recorded or overlooked in history.
