ABSTRACT

This paper analyzes events that occurred during the Ming dynasty in the first half of the reign of Wanli with a focus on its participation in the Imjin War, an international conflict that transformed the East Asian order in the late 16th century. Despite extensive research on the Imjin War, there has been little attention given to the conflicts between the Joseon and Ming dynasties. Therefore, this paper aims to examine the Ming’s situation before the Imjin War and the military situation of Liaodong, an adjacent area and supply base for the Ming's participation in the war. The paper notes that while Jang Ge-jeong’s(張居正) reform politics helped secure national finances and promote institutional changes, Emperor Wanli’s direct rule disrupted the ruling order and led to external invasions and internal rebellions. Moreover, Liaodong faced military challenges due to the disorderly military command system and frequent invasions by Mongols and Jurchens. Before the outbreak of the Imjin War, the mobilized military power in response to Jurchen intentions. However, due to the turmoil of the central government, they delayed participation in the Imjin War until December 1592. The paper sheds light on the importance of understanding Ming’s situation before and during the Imjin War to exact a clearer understanding of the East Asian order in the 16thcentery.
