ABSTRACT

This study investigates the diplomatic practices and treatment of the Guoxinshis who were regularly dispatched between Northern Song Dynasty and Khitan as part of the Treaty of Chanyuan. The study examines the multifaceted roles of envoys dispatched by the royal court of Northern Song to entertain Khitan envoys, such as the Jiebanshis, Guanbanshis, and Songbanshis. In different capacities, these envoys were responsible for ensuring the safe and entertaining passage of Khitan envoys to and from the vicinity of Kaifeng where the Song emperor resided. The responsibilities of Song envoys during these prolonged and delicate processes were paramount since any misstep could damage state dignity. Thus, only individuals with reputable academic refinement, character, and knowledge of the Khitan were appointed into these positions. The system of managing Banshis became a hallmark of East Asian diplomacy, influencing neighboring countries and shaping diplomatic practices in the region.
