AB - This study explores organizational dynamics and human resource practices of the Senman Takusyoku Corporation (鮮滿拓殖株式会社), a state-sponsored “special corporation” forged by the imperial edits of Japan’s Government-General in colonial Korea. The paper specifically aims to expose how these “special corporations” served multifaceted and instrumental roles in imperial policy execution.
While existing literature on colonial state corporations in Korea have predominately concentrated on processes leading to their formation or systemic roles, this research shifts the focus inward toward the sinews and bones of the corporation— its internal operations and staffing mechanisms. By dissecting the structure and personnel management of the Senman Takusyoku Corporation, an instrumental organ used by the state in implementing Korean Manchurian immigration policies since its inception in 1936, this research aims to craft a view that encapsulates the complexity of these “special corporations.” It posits that their role in shaping and propelling Japan’s colonial enterprise in Korea transcended mere administrative functions. Rather, these corporations served as conduits for the strategic machinations of the empire.
