ABSTRACT

World-systems analysis has rarely been employed to investigate the distinct historical evolution and dynamics of the modern Manchurian region, a gap noted by both local and international academics. This study evaluates the viability of incorporating world-systems analysis into modern Manchurian studies. It begins by reviewing existing research on modern Manchuria within Korea, identifying gaps and opportunities. The paper then addresses the shortcomings of worldsystems analysis by demonstrating how insights from Manchurian studies can provide corrective perspectives. It also proposes methodologies for embedding world-systems analysis into Manchurian studies, aiming to uncover synergies between these disciplines. By forging this link, the study aspires to enrich both regional studies and global systemic analyses, enhancing our understanding of Manchuria’s place in world history.
