ABSTRACT

This study investigates the professors’ requirements for effective operation and development of English medium instruction in universities, which is expected to further grow in the future. To this end, in-depth interviews were first conducted to identify the problems of English medium instruction. Based on the results of the interviews, a questionnaire was developed and administered to extract the characteristics and conditions of effective English medium instruction and to investigate the policy support needed for their effective operation. The results were as follows: The professors believed that an effective English medium instruction was one that could adjust the pace and content of the class based on the level of the learners. They responded that this would require good English proficiency on the part of the professors and the creation of an appropriate atmosphere for the use of English. In order to enhance the effectiveness of English medium instruction, various changes in the content and approach of teaching were expected. With respect to policy support, the professors urged for the operation of programs to help them improve their English proficiency as well as for the hosting of special lectures and workshops on English teaching techniques.
