ABSTRACT

The study aims to investigate the aspects of learning strategies in using digital English materials as supplementary learning resources in the elementary English class. It also analyzes how learner’s variables such as gender, language skill, and attitude towards English learning, have effects on the use of the learning strategies. For these purposes,6th graders at an elementary school were taught with English digital materials for 6weeks. Before and after the lessons, the survey was conducted to investigate the aspects of their learning strategies when using the materials. In-depth interview was also conducted to the students to examine how they interacted with the digital materials. The results showed that the frequency of students' use of learning strategies increased after the digital material-based lessons. Regarding students' use of learning strategies based on their English proficiency level, the students in a higher level group were found to use more strategies than those in a lower level group. Those results draw the conclusions that the students' language skill and their attitude toward English learning have influenced the use of learning strategies. In addition, it is shown that digital material-assisted English learning can encourage students' self-directed learning.
