ABSTRACT

Robots are new types of materials in elementary English teaching and learning. They can provide a powerful methodology for involving students in an interesting,emotional and authentic learning experience with language used for genuine communicative purposes. The methodology using robots is student-centered, and it takes the experience of the classroom out into the world. This study attempted to develop elementary English learning contents using a hybrid intelligent robot and examine their effects to students' interest, participation, confidence in elementary English classes. The contents were developed according to the elementary English curriculum. In the contents, new technologies for elementary English teaching and learning using a hybrid intelligent robot, such as voice recognition, face recognition,pattern recognition and telepresence were used. Through this research, it is believed that robots can help students raise English communicative competence and bring opportunities for students to develop their confidence and independence and to work together in a real-world environment by interacting each other.
