ABSTRACT

The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of a blended learning method on students' achievement in an English reading and discussion class. In addition, this study attempted to describe students' attitude toward the blended learning method by a qualitative analysis. This study was conducted with 15 college students from October to December, 2009. The experimental group consisted of seven students who used a web-based bulletin board in a blended learning setting, and the control group consisted of eight students who studied using face-to-face learning. Each group partook in reading and discussion activities, employing literature and newspaper articles as main texts. The results of this study indicated that pre-reading activities using a web-based bulletin board had a positive effect on student speaking achievement. Results of the qualitative research provided useful insights in how to improve a blended teaching and learning method, in light of texts, CMC tools, discussion questions and its effects on language abilities. In sum, the present study suggests that blended learning can be an effective pre-reading activity.
