ABSTRACT

Dynamic testing is a new way of integrating testing and instruction. It is rooted in Vygotsky’s view that the development of human cognition can be mended with adults’proper mediation. It measures learners’ ability to solve the testing tasks independently and learner’s ability to solve the tasks with the help from adults. The latter ability is a potential ability which will develop as an independent ability in the future. This study aims to introduce dynamic testing into elementary English education and find what benefits can be obtained. Dynamic testing was applied to a 6th grade class of 31students. The results revealed that compared to traditional result-oriented tests, more detailed information on students’ English language development status could be obtained. Since the dynamic testing involved the teacher’s mediation, the testing process could also function as a learning opportunity for some students. That is,learning and assessment could be integrated with dynamic assessment. Lastly, this paper emphasized the need for more study on the English language development of the elementary school students. Such studies were expected to indicate what kind of mediation would be effective in expediting students’ language development.
