ABSTRACT

The present study attempts to investigate the English achievement gap in the National English Ability Test (NEAT). There is, in fact, much research on narrowing the English achievement gap. These studies, however, have been conducted with respect to students’ listening and reading scores in English tests, but little attention has been paid to the gap in students’ speaking and writing abilities. In order to overcome this limitation in previous research, this study tries to discover variables affecting the students’ English achievement gap with the NEAT; a test which includes listening, reading, speaking, and writing items. For this purpose, the current study collected information on students and teachers’ learning and teaching activities using a survey. The descriptive statistics showed that student academic attitude, special programs for students needing academic help, professional development programs for teachers, school size, and several more factors affected student achievement. It was also noted that the presence of a native speaker of English in the school had a positive influence on academic achievement. The extent of the effects of these variables on achievement varied according the test prompts and levels. The contribution of this study is to show significant variables which may affect students’ English achievement, and open up the way to do an in-depth study.
