ABSTRACT

Robert Schumann's early piano works are usually considered as the prominent examples of ‘character piece’ due to its manifestation of programatic idea and the association with extra-musical elements. However,‘character’ Schumann pursued in his music seems more properly explained in terms of his personal musical style, rather than its literary or programatic association. This paper first examines the general definition of ‘chatacter piece’, which is problematic to properly explain Schumann’s character piece. Tracing the meaning of ‘character’ in Schumann's music, which is strongly involved with his intent to express ‘the poetic idea' through music,I suggest that Schumann's character pieces can be defined with concrete musical style, as exemplified in the sketches for Impromptus on a theme by Clara Wieck, Op. 5, and other famous miniature pieces such as “Pierrot”in Carnaval, Op. 9 and “Träumerei” in Kinderszenen, Op. 15. As a result, invention of characteristic motivic or thematic idea, and its repetitive entrance and transformation, bringing subtle changes to its psychological quality, are suggested as the definitive stylistic elements in Schumann’s character pieces.
