AB - Many large-sized hospitals have adopted advanced management methods widely used in other industries to
cope with changes in healthcare environment, and to manage hospitals efficiently. Hospital information
systems (HIS) have become one of important infrastructures of hospital management and information
technology (IT) plays an increasingly significant role in the healthcare industry. IT investments of hospitals
are growing exponentially and various information systems such as OCS (Order Communication System),
EMR (Electronic Medical Record), PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System), ERP (Enterprise
Resource Planning) have been implemented at a number of hospitals in Korea. Development of efficient and
effective information systems and its operation are key factors in determining the competitiveness of
hospitals. We have surveyed and analyzed the current status of hospital information systems of hospitals
selected in this work, and proposed an information strategy for e-Hospital implementation. Firstly,
implementation status of major subsystems of HIS such as OCS, PACS, and EMR has been reviewed and types
of IT personnel management have been examined. We also have interviewed executives of a university
medical center to consult the views of executives concerning the importance of HIS and implementation
strategy. Based on the field survey result, an information strategy for e-Hospital implementation has been
proposed, that can be referenced by hospitals to build their own information strategy. We expect that the
study result can contribute to understanding the present status and issues of HIS and planning information
strategy of hospitals.
