ABSTRACT

This research is a part of International Internet and Election project and conducts a web sphere analysis for political websites during the 2004 Philippine’s national election. Based on the 92 sample websites various in types (that are of political parties, candidates, media, civic & advocacies, and governmental agencies), this paper examines the political role of the Internet around the election campaign in a larger context. The types of content and service features contained on the political websites are investigated. This research found that both information and engagement features on the websites of Philippine’s parties and NGOs were much more prevalent than other types of sites in the sample. Candidate websites were also visible actors, for example, in terms of encouraging people to exchange their opinions about electoral issues in electronic boards. Further, the findings are discussed from the perspective of Philippine’s political culture.
