ABSTRACT

This study tries to explore journalistic features of the portal in Korea. Although portal’s gatekeeping role has been suggested to explain its journalistic role, it is, however, highly limited because it neither produces news stories, nor did choose individual news stories. Concept of the gatewatching, meaning to watch out numerous news outlets, could explain more effectively the role of portal journalism. This paper examines sourcesites’ networks of 12 portals in Korea focusing on three analytic points such as: the scale of sourcesites, preferential sites, and relations among portals in terms of sharing sites. The results reveal that the portal possesses a potential of gatewatcher. It provides multi-perspective news by aggregating a number of sourcesites. However, the portals intend to depend on a few types of sourcesites: mainly on mainstream journalism. They also share same sourcesites with other portals, which used to generate a homogeneous news contents. From these findings, it suggests that if the portal would develop the function of gatewatching, it is more important to widen the range of sourcesite diversity and to develop differences among the portals than just to focus on increase the number of sourcesites.
