ABSTRACT

This study examined the functional relationship between Internet communities based on real-world in terpersonal relations(IC-RR) and those based on online relations(IC-OR) through the theory of the gratification niches. The IC-RR exhibited broader niches in information acquirement and relationship construction, while the IC-OR exhibited broader niches in entertainment/relaxation. The high degree of functional similarity between the IC-RR and the IC-OR was found in interest sharing and information acquirement, while the least functional similarity was shown in relationship construction and entertainment/relaxation. Concerning a competitive advantage, the IC-RR was superior in interest sharing, relationship construction, and information acquirement, while the IC-OR in entertainment/relaxation. This result means that relationship construction and information acquirement have been served by the IC-RR, whereas the IC-OR has provided greater entertainment/relaxation. In other words, the two types of Internet communities have coexisted, complementing each other with their own functions.
