ABSTRACT

This study investigates (1) how the project manager's leadership influences the level of participants' empowerment and the project performance under the multiple information systems development(MISD) environment, and (2) how the complexity and uncertainty of information technologies(IT) mediate the relationship between the participants' empowerment and their project performance. Findings show that transformational leadership has positive impacts on the level of empowerment, which in turn influences the project performance in a positive way. Also, we found the mediating roles of the complexity and uncertainty of IT between the empowerment and the project performance. The higher the complexity of IT and the lower the uncertainty of IT, the higher impact of empowerment on project performance. Both transformational and transactional leadership show positive impacts on the project performance.
