AB - The purpose of this paper is to examine the idea of college in information society and era of global competition. For this purpose, this paper examines the Idea of the university in the 19th century. It constitutes independence of the university and liberal education. University should pursue knowledge of human nature and the knowledge of exploration itself. But the idea of university undergoes changes under the influence of the logic of capitalism. Business and Engineering has become the center of the university and university has been dominated by the logic of competition and capital. As a result, the influence of humanistic education naturally declined in the university.
A lot of papers proposed methods to overcome the crisis and environment. Popular methods among them regained the spirit of the idea of university and the humanities in college education. I think these suggestions have less realizability because university administrators will not accept them. But this paper suggests investigation the role and function of the humanities in information society and the era of global competition. Particularly, the humanities can be combined with other courses through convergence and integration. Therefore doing research on humanities’ roles in information society means that it has great value. In addition we must criticize the uniformity and the unitarity of university evaluation. These methods of the evaluation interrupt recovery of the humanities in information society.
