ABSTRACT

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the objects of emotional labor according to clinical nurses’ work department. Methods: This study used a descriptive and retrospective design with secondary data analysis. Primary data were collected from April to May in 2015, 187 nurses who working at five university hospitals located in B and Y city. The degree of emotional labor was measured with visual analogue scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Tukey and Games-Howell examination with the SPSS statistics 23.0 program. Results: The objects of clinical nurses’ emotional labor varied according to their work department. In the case of general word, which were included patient, family, doctor. In the case of intensive care unit, which were included patient, family, doctor, and fellow nurse. Emergency room nurses had the most diverse objects of emotional labor such as patient, family, doctor, other department nurse, 119 emergency medical technician, and policeman. The objects of emotional labor of operating room nurses were doctor and fellow nurse. Conclusion: In order to manage clinical nurses’ emotional labor there is a need to develop a variety of strategies based on the objects of emotional labor according to nurses’ work department
