ABSTRACT

Lee, Seon-Yeong. 2003. A Study on the Changes of Stems into Prefixes. Korean Semantics, 13. This paper aims to discuss the changes of stems into prefixes in Korean. Untill now, the changes of stems into suffixes have been discussed, but the changes of stems into prefixes haven’t been discussed in detail. I found some examples of prefixes derived from stems. The Korean verb ‘DEUWI-(드위-)’ used in Late Middle Korean was changed into the prefix ‘DWI-(뒤-)’ in Contemporary Korean. I also found the same kind of changes in ‘HWI-(휘-)’ and ‘DEUL-(들-)’. The changes of stems into prefixes developed through three steps. In the first step, morphemes are only used as stems. In the second step, morphemes are used not only as stems but as prefixes. In the last step, morphemes are only used as prefixes.
