ABSTRACT

Jang Young-suk. 2007. A Cognitive Linguistic Study of Korean Verb 'nohta'. Korean Semantics 24. The purpose of this study is to discuss the meaning of Korean verb 'nohta' in light of cognitive Linguistics. In this study, I defined the prototype meanings of the verb, and analyzed its derivative meanings. The prototypic meaning of 'nohta' is that a patient gets out of an agent's impact by dispelling it. The verb of 'nohta' can be discussed in view of agent, patient, source and goal. A patient is grouped into a concrete one and an abstract one, and a concrete one is again classified into a movable one and an unmovable one. Its meaning is largely divided into two according to the focus of meaning. If the focus of meaning is placed on source, that verb means to get out of something or someone. If the focus of meaning is put on goal, that means to let it be. By making a study of verb 'nohta', it's to find out the semantic structure of equivocal word, its semantic enlargement.
