ABSTRACT

Choe, Hyeong-gang. 2007. A Study on the Meanings in the Derivative Words of ‘saeng-’, ‘nal-’ and ‘maen-’. Korean Semantics, 24. The goal of this paper is to check the meanings in the derivative words of ‘saeng(생)-’, ‘nal(날)-’ and ‘maen(맨)-’. The common meaning of prefix ‘saeng-’, ‘nal-’ and ‘maen-’ is ‘naked’. The meaning of ‘naked’ is the basic meaning of ‘maen-’, but that is one of the applied meanings in ‘saeng-’ and ‘nal-’. The frequency of ‘saeng-’ is higher than ‘nal-’ and ‘maen-’. And the expansion of meaning is easy in ‘saeng-’. So we coin new words, we choose ‘saeng-’ which has high productivity. It is difficult to find the derivative words of ‘saeng-,’ ‘nal-’ and ‘maen-’ which have the same root of the common meaning. In the derivative words of ‘saeng-’ and ‘maen-’ which have the same root, the meaning of prefix ‘saeng-’ is different from the meaning of ‘maen-’. The ‘nal-’ and ‘maen-’ may have the same root within narrow limits.
