AB - This study aimed to examine vocabulary knowledge of loan words and investigate a correlation between knowledge of loan words and individual variables. To meet the goal, this study recruited 17 South Koreans and 57 North Korean refugees and surveyed loan word adaptation through a questionnaire. The study also employed a vocabulary knowledge test to evaluate North Korean refugees' knowledge of loan words. Consequently, the study found out that there was very significant correlation between accuracy rate and degree of life satisfaction in South Korea. However, no correlation was found with gender, age, and duration of stay in South Korea. Also, the more important words are, the higher accuracy rate they showed with significance. Based on the results, the study suggested that there were strong necessities of developing a workbook for loan words with self-study purpose and providing ongoing community-based South Korean language program.
