ABSTRACT

“Geumankeum” is known as an adverb representing “as much(many)/to that extent”. So it is described in the dictionaries that it is used only in its meaning, ‘proportional equivalence’. However, this paper argues that the adverb has the additional function to connect the sentence in the meaning of the expatiation. In this process, it said that it is necessary to set up a function that is called ‘inferential expatiation’. I also examined the ending expressions that emerged together with “geumankeum” in this semantic function. The contents of each chapter are summarized as follows. In section 2, I objectively demonstrated that this adverb has a unique function, distinct from the conventionally proposed function. To this end, I looked at the unique syntactic and semantic features that appear when used as the function. In section 3, I distinguished between concepts of ‘paraphrase’ and ‘expatiation’. In doing so, I identified the unique characteristics of ‘expatiation’ and then specified the meaning function of “geumankeum” as the basis. In section 4, I established the semantic features of the sentence including this adverb. I suggested that because of these features, there are various end expressions that are co-occurred in the sentences.
