ABSTRACT

This study examined the impact of mothers’ child-rearing attitude and parenting self-efficacy in multicultural families on children’s school adjustment, and the temporal trajectories of these three factors. Analyzing data on 1,224 cases from the second to sixth waves of the Multicultural Adolescents Panel Study (child and parent data merged) revealed that the school adjustment levels of children in multicultural families first increased, then decreased, and again increased over five years. Mothers’ child-rearing attitude (parenting self-efficacy) showed an increasing (a decreasing) trend. Mothers’ education level was significantly associated with all main variables. Latent growth modeling revealed that the initial level of mothers’ child-rearing attitude and parenting self-efficacy significantly increased children’s school adjustment level. Furthermore, the rate change of mothers’ child-rearing attitudeand parenting self-efficacy also significantly predicted the rate of change of children’s school adjustment. Moreover, mothers’ changing child-rearing attitude and parenting self-efficacy cumulatively affected children’s school adjustment. Finally, we present some policy and practical implications.
