ABSTRACT

This study is a qualitative exploration of the experiences of migrant single mothers who have resided in Korea for a relatively extended period, their formation of a sense of belonging within the Empowerment Program for migrant single mothers, and their interactions with supporting organizations and fellow participants. The increasing number of migrant single mothers has heightened policy interest in them, leading to an increase in academic research on their experiences. Although various studies have been conducted on the difficulties, processes of self-reliance, and policies experienced by migrant single mothers, no studies have been conducted on their participation in support programs. This study focuses on the sense of belonging experienced by migrant single mothers participating in empowerment programs. A sense of belonging is the emotion that an individual feels as they experience the societal position they hold as members of a community, influenced by the political and ethical values of society and the identity formed based on them (Yuval Davis, 2011). In-depth interviews with migrant single mothers in this study reveal that their sense of belonging is grounded in the act of care and conceptualizes it as a space of care.
