ABSTRACT

This study analyzes the impact of married immigrant women’s social participation on their life satisfaction and examines the mediating effects of family and friend support on this relationship. To this end, multiple regression and hierarchical regression analyses were conducted on data collected from married immigrant women in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province who had used multicultural family support centers. Results revealed that social participation was the most influential variable in determining life satisfaction, even after controlling for demographic characteristics. In the relationship between social participation and life satisfaction, family support and friend support demonstrated significant partial mediation effects. In particular, friend support was proven to be a key factor in enhancing life satisfaction. Previous studies on marriage migrant women have primarily focused on the effects of social adaptation, acculturative stress, and experiences of discrimination on life satisfaction. In contrast, this study distinguishes itself by categorizing social participation into specific forms—such as volunteering activities, participation in civic organizations, and involvement in social cooperatives—and empirically examining their effects on life satisfaction. Notably, the finding that social participation influences life satisfaction through the mediation of social support extends existing research by conceptualizing social participation not merely as an activity, but as a process of forming psychological and relational resources. Based on these findings, this study proposes policy and practical implications aimed at improving the quality of life of marriage migrant women, including expanding opportunities for social participation within local communities and strengthening multidimensional social support systems that encompass both family and friends.
