ABSTRACT

This study aimed to examine the mediating effect of bicultural acceptance attitudes on the relationship between support services and life satisfaction among multicultural adolescents, and to verify whether there are significant differences in the structural paths according to residential area. Data were drawn from the fifth wave (2023) of the second phase of the Multicultural Adolescents Panel Study (MAPS). The participants included 1,529 multicultural adolescents enrolled in the second year of middle school. Structural equation modeling and multi-group analysis were conducted using SPSS 23.0 and AMOS 23.0. The results were as follows. First, support services did not have a significant direct effect on life satisfaction. Second, bicultural acceptance attitudes showed a full mediating effect on the relationship between support services and life satisfaction. Third, the multi-group analysis revealed that in urban areas, none of the structural paths were significant, except for the path from bicultural acceptance attitudes to life satisfaction. In contrast, in non-urban areas, significant differences were found in the paths from support services to bicultural acceptance attitudes and from support services to life satisfaction, and bicultural acceptance attitudes showed a partial mediating effect in the relationship between support services and life satisfaction. Based on these findings, this study discusses region-specific policy implications for supporting multicultural adolescents and emphasizes the need for tailored social support strategies that foster bicultural acceptance.
