ABSTRACT

This article examines the feature of love in Patrice Pavis’s play Vania andHer from the perspective of psychoanalysis. Dealing with two central characters’lifelong relationship, the play centres on Vania and Elena’s annual reunionfor twenty years. In this context, this article first shows what the actof annual meeting means for Vania and Elena. This article also argues howlove is generated by Vania’s trees and photos throughout the play, in theknowledge that Vania takes photos of trees, which is deemed as his act oflove. In dealing with these issues, we could encounter how Elena could beregarded as a silent siren, thereby making a distiction between Vania andher in terms of the way in which they exsit in the context of their loverelationship. In doing so, this article underlines how the play epitomises achronology of preserving (impossible) love.
