ABSTRACT

This article focuses on the “Socialization of Local” that emerged in the 16th17th centuries in Joseon Korea. I examine the specific activities of the literati who led public practices through Jonaewon, a public hospital, in the early 17th century. Previous studies have defined Jonaewon’s identity as a “private hospital”. However, this evaluation does not properly assess the “social practices” of the literati. The moral orientation of Neo-Confucian scholars created the idea that the management of the state was not something that could be done by central bureaucrats alone. Rather, it could also be achieved by promoting “social practice in rural communities”. This article criticizes the research trend that puts the local literati and state in a confrontational position, or limits their role to education at Soewon. Instead, I seek to redefine the relationship between the state and literati as a collaboration between the government and the people. By exploring new cases of activities by the literati in establishing and operating public hospitals, I aim to actively evaluate the historical phenomenon and significance of the “discovery of social” in the 16th–17th centuries of the Joseon Dynasty.
