ABSTRACT

Anton Wilhelm Amo (1703?-1759?), born in West Africa, was the first African to earn a degree in philosophy at a European university. Despite a lack of serious study on his philosophy for a long time, the recent years have witnessed an increasing interest and research among scholars. This paper aims to provide a brief overview of Amo’s life and the core tenets of his philosophy, as well as to critically examine recent interpretive controversies regarding his philosophy. Firstly, I explore Amo’s life and the core thesis of his philosophy, the impassivity of the human mind, along with its supporting arguments. Secondly, I review recent debates among Amo scholars regarding whether Amo’s positive theory of mind is closer to pre-established harmony or occasionalism. Finally, I argue that the so-called “Peripatetic Ditum Objection” is not a decisive rebuttal to the pre-established harmony interpretation, as it is often considered in the literature.
