AB - This study analyzes “Ukmyeonbi yeombulseoseung (郁面婢念佛西昇)” in Samguk yusa by combining Victor Turner’s rites of passage with spatial dynamics (horizontal, vertical, radial). Rather than a simple rebirth tale, it is a profound narrative depicting transcendence from an oppressive social order through a three-stage spatial movement. First, “separation” is embodied by horizontal movements (her commute between secular and sacred spaces, and her side-to-side swaying) symbolizing karmic cycles and her will to break free. Second, “liminality” peaks in a vertical breakthrough. Her extreme penance marks a symbolic death, culminating in her soaring through the temple roof, an anti-structural climax escaping hierarchy. Finally, “reincorporation” occurs as a radial diffusion. Having attained her true body, the expansive light, eternal celestial music, and remaining physical traces validate her transcendence. Ultimately, this text brilliantly spatializes the anthropological ritual process of liberation. University 박성호 <욱면비염불서승>에 나타난 통과의례와 공간 역학 연구 183
