AB - Although much research has examined the correlation between urbanization and land use change in large-scale level, more study on local context is still needed to understand this relationship and dynamics of the change.
Drawing upon field research on a peri-urban village of Hanoi, the article explores the impact of urbanization on changes in social relations around the land, shifts in villagers’ perceptions of land, and political reaction from below to land appropriation. The findings suggest that urbanization had reduced the symbolic value of built-up land, which resulted in an initial evolution for women’s land access but caused an increase in gambling activities and bankruptcy. It also excludes people from farmland by both the state policies and market forces, of which augmented by the regulation force, the market has been the primary force accounting for significant land use changes in the community.
