ABSTRACT

The reasons for the formation of grandparents-grandchildren families are complex and diverse, including family weakening and family dismantling. Especially in the changing socio-economic situation, the increasing trend of the divorce rate is the biggest cause to increase the grandparents-grandchildren families. In Korea, there is no support system for grandparents-grandchildren families at present, so various needs of grandparents and grandchildren are not reflected. In addition, support for grandparents is at a minimum, not only economic difficulties but also negative mental health and parenting attitudes due to parenting stress. Therefore, comprehensive welfare services such as support promotion, family function reinforcement, and family reunification should be needed in order to establish legal grounds only for grandparents and to link the elderly with child institutions and systematically integrate them. The purpose of this study is to diagnose the present situation and problems of the newly emerged family – type grandparents and support policies due to the changing social structure, and suggest the limitations and support measures of the support policy services provided.
