ABSTRACT

Slanted contents and descriptions about other countries in textbooks can make students have fixed ideas and prejudices. Research for reviewing the contents about a certain country in the existing textbooks is essential to development of a balanced textbook. The purpose of this study was to determine the differences in expression of the national image of France, as reflected in the North and South Korean geography textbooks in the time of enlightenment, during the Japanese colonial period, and after the national division. While the textbooks in the period of enlightenment gave relatively detailed and objective description of France, those during the Japanese colonial period gave more unfavorable and shorter description of the country than of Germany that was an alley to Japan at that time. The Korean geography textbooks after the Liberation had description of France as the country with the most highly developed type of agriculture, followed by the contents about industrialization of the country. Recently, as the South Korean society becomes multi-cultural society, the textbooks deal with diversified themes, including social issues of France. In contrast, the North Korean textbooks still describe France in the perspective of imperialism and Cold War.
