ABSTRACT

The lining of Baekdusan area’s demarcation has been seemingly remained unsolved for 300 years when the issues were on the table in 1712. There are still slightly different versions of maps on the border. A majority of Geography textbooks helped Korea students realize that the mountain peak of Baekdusan belonged to Korean territory. The two historical events, the Gando Convention (1909) and the Treaty between North Korea and China on the Demarcation of the Korean-Chinese National Border (1962), were deeply involved in the demarcation of Baekdusan area. In particular, the latter treaty between ‘the North Korea’ as ‘an anti-state organization’ and China seemed to contribute to the demarcation of the Cheonji’s east area in some maps, which in turn influenced the contemporary maps. It is natural that there should be official guidelines or regulations on the national border. It is also necessary to investigate the proper demarcation lines on maps and relevant guidelines. Finally, it is meaningful to examine what historical factors had influenced the current demarcation situation.
