ABSTRACT

This paper deals with Matteo Ricci’s world map Kunyu wanguo quantu (「坤輿萬國全圖」) in terms of storytelling from beginning to climax, and analyzing the contents of world geography in the map. The process of the world map made by Matteo Ricci can be traced through ascending from the first world map in Zhaoqing (肇慶) to the world map of Kunyu wanguo quantu in Beijing (北京). This ascending way was made by Ricci's big individual progress embraced religion and a climax of the exchange of cultures between East and West. Furthermore, the map changed the contents and knowledge structure of world geography such as introducing new concept of latitude, zone etc., and new discovery of regional geography of America, Magellanica, Asia, Africa, Europe, and the concept of unity and sphericity of the Earth.
