ABSTRACT

The purpose of this paper is to develop an environmental interpretation program of Yeongsil Trail at Mt. Halla National Park, focusing on how to raise environmental awareness of national park’s visitors. To enhance visitors’ amusement and educational effects, the interpretation recourses are classified into three categories, which are national park value resources (VR), natural resources (NR) and cultural resources (CR). The cognitive development stages are also considered for designing age appropriate programs. Yeongsil Trail is much shorter than other trails at Mt. Halla and has an abundance of natural and cultural resources for creating environmental interpretation programs. To make the interpretation resource table of Yeongsil Trail, twenty-five interpretation points are selected all over the trail, and fifty-eight interpretation resources are extracted from the whole points, which consist of 12 VR, 26 NR and 20 CR. Considering the learning ability and physical work capacity of participants, and examining the traveling distance, resting places, and interpretation resources of each interpretation point of Yeongsil Trail, the interpretation program for the middle school students consists of 15 interpretation points which are extracted from the interpretation resource table. It also consists of 38 interpretation resources which include 9 VR, 18 NR and 11 CR. The time required for carrying out the program is about 90 minutes.
