AB - The purpose of this writing is to study the change of Gender Symbol, that appears in the novels of Okinawa, from late 1970 to mid 1980 which was the time of return after the long occupation of America. After the return, the change could be sensed from the relationship of US soldiers and Okinawan women in late 1970.
The biggest change was that, instead of being helpless daughters or wives of Okinawan men, in other words, being free from the image of rape victims or prostitutes of American soldiers, they were illustrated as independent figures with decent works whether in economically or mentally. Whether it be dates or marriages, their emphasis on independent lives were distinguished from their older generations with traditional thoughts.
It also worths to observe the appearance of men from mainland who were not seen before the return. The images of men from mainland were described as immoral relations or frauds, and for the ones who experienced the war in Okinawa, the negative perception of men from mainland was even stronger.
It is not so excessive to emphasize that the reversal of gender symbol was by the writing tactics of Okinawan authors from the post-war, who saw through the political functions between the American military, mainland Japan, and Okinawa.
