ABSTRACT

Objectives This case report aimed to report a 50-year-old female with chronic dry eye syndrome who showed significant improvement following treatment with Modified Gwankeibujalijung-tang and lifestyle modifications based on Sasang constitutional medicine. Methods The patient was treated for 7 months with Modified Gwankeibujalijung-tang, acupuncture, moxibustion, and personalized lifestyle guidance, including caffeine and food restriction, and salt supplementation. Symptom changes were assessed using the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), and subjective assessments. Results The OSDI score improved from 41 to 7, and the NRS score decreased from 9 to 1. Other symptoms, including urinary frequency, dry mouth, and insomnia, were also improved. No adverse effects were observed, and liver and kidney function remained within normal limits. Conclusion This study suggests that Korean medicine, including Modified Gwankeibujalijung-tang, other Korean traditional interventions, and lifestyle modification may be a safe and effective treatment for dry eye syndrome. Further clinical studies are needed to validate the safety and effectiveness.
