The Educational Research Institute at Cheongju National University of Education began as an elementary education research center in 1989. That elementary education research center, following an organizational reform of Cheongju National University of Education on May 12, 2005, was restructured into an affiliated research center. Cheongju National University's science education research center (established in 1976) and its student life research center, which had existed before the elementary education research center was established, were combined with the elementary education research center to form the Educational Research Institute. Between 1989 and 2007, teacher education seminars and elementary education expert seminars were held with the aim of consistently expanding the channel for discourse on action research, teaching expertise, and joint research by universities and the teaching industry. The seminars held during this period served as the foundation for the Education Research Institute being selected for support by the National Research Foundation of Korea as a key research center, and the creation of Cheongju National University of Education's teacher education system in 2008. After being selected as a key research center in the field of human science by the National Research Foundation of Korea in November 2008, the Educational Research Institute spent 9 years engaged in research in the creation of a professional development system for teachers' voluntary improvement and sharing of teaching ability. On the tenth anniversary of the Educational Research Institute, its members put their heads together and came up with the vision of a "global and local hub for professional development and research." This vision encapsulates the aspiration of the members to create a global network for research and implementation in the specialized field of teaching expertise that is based in Cheongju, Korea. From its very beginnings, the Educational Research Institute at Cheongju National University of Education has engaged in active research that brings universities and the teaching industry together for joint research and the practical implementation of its findings. This aligns with Cheongju National University of Education's specialization strategy, which aims at field-synchronized research. With its slogan of "innovation through research and implementation," the Education Research Institute focuses on research of schools and teaching as a specialization strategy it sees fit for the niche area of research in which it is engaged. Today, the Educational Research Institute at Cheongju National University of Education is a leader in advocating for academic discourse related to research of schools and teaching and in creating positive change in schools through ongoing research and the publication of research findings, training and education activities, the holding of academic contests in Korea and abroad, and the publication of literary series.
