ABSTRACT

This study aims at comparing the Korean and Japanese translation ‘Kim Ji Young born 1982’. The reason of the selection of this novel is the issue of common interest to Japanese as well as Korean. This novel deals with social problems through the main character experiences. Many Korean women may have had same experiences like Kim Ji Young. Although it deals with the material of Korean culture, discrimination as women living in Japan is not much different from Koreans. So it is drawing sympathy from Japanese readers. The cultural elements appearing in literary works are important to infer a part of the novel’s period background and atmosphere. This novel presents statistical figures and news articles, which are written more easily than literary works. The Japanese translation focuses on acceptability and legibility, and has chosen a translation method that describes cultural elements. This study excerpts cultural elements such as the newly-coined words, living culture related vocabulary, women’s point of view related vocabulary and onomatopoeic words. It is meaningful how cultural elements are actually being translated in Korean and Japanese.
