ABSTRACT

The purpose of this article is to reflect critically on the hostility and hospitality of multicultural Korean society toward Yemeni refugees. I would like to point out the possibility of inclusion in Cumda culture of Jeju island. Cumda culture carries out indifference as a precursor to inclusion. This article appeals for the consideration of indifference beyond hostility and hospitality, and εποχη, the suspension of judgment, before the perception of others. Hostility and hospitality are expressions of immediate and active interest in others. When we meet refugees we face, we usually present hostility or hospitality. However, There is actually a third reaction. Indifference. Hostility and hospitality are expressions of immediate and active concern, but indifference is a moratorium on attention. 22% of Koreans’ positions on refugee acceptance were in unable-to-express-position in June 2018(UNHCR, 2020). And 61.4% of Jeju islanders did not select the pros and cons(Jeon & Kim, 2021). This means moratorium on interest, that is indifference. Jeju people would seem not to pay much attention to the new strangers. This originated from Jeju’s CUMDA culture which has been said ‘Dru-ssang Nae-bula’. It has been believed in Jeju to get to be a community by standing alone in indifference.
